Quarterly Reflection:
My playing abilities have significantly increased after being moved to the first violin section. The first piece that I was given to play in that section was Aaron Copeland's Hoe Down. The piece requires players to shift up into sixth position. Until I made the switch to the first violins, I only knew how to play in first position. Being in the section has increased my sense of balance too. I am now picking up on where I should "play out", where I should back off, and what notes should and should not have vibrato. My sight reading abilities have also increased because I had to learn pieces that the orchestra has been playing for the past year and a half over again. It is impossible to practice every little thing in every piece of music that we have. Because of this and the pace at which I am expected to keep in the first violin section, I have had to really focus on sight reading. Overall the switch to the first violin section has helped me become more of a diverse and polished player.
